Annie Lebovitz

Well i like had no idea who to do this last report on! While i was chatting with my auntie about how bad the lakers were playing tonight i asked her who i should check out and her first response was ansel but i already did him. then she said annie lebovitz. and i have never heard of her so i thought id give her a chance. she isnt the usual type of photgrapher but she seems really cool....
so here it goes haha

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut October 2,1949. She is the third of six children in a Jewish family. Her mom was a modern dance instructor, and her daddy was in the USA Air Force. In high school she began to write and play music. She went the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied painting. Then she became interested in photography after taking pictures when she lived in the Philippines, where her fathers job relocated them. When Leibovitz came back to the United States in 1970, she got her first job for the new Rolling Stones magazine. she worked for the recently launched Rolling Stone magazine, she gained the role of being cheif photographer.. Leibovitz worked for the magazine until 1983, her portraits of celebs changed the whole look of the magazine.

she contiued to shoot other celebrities and did some other noted accoplisments:

-In 1980 a photo shoot with John Lennon for Rolling Stone, then he insisted Yoko Ono be on the cover as well.
-Leibovitz photographed celebrities for an international advertising campaign for American Express charge cards.
-In 1991, she entered an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
-Also in 1991,she remade Margaret Bourke-White's feat, she put eagle gargoyles on the top floor of the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, where she captured the dancer David Parsons.
-A props to Leibovitz's work was held at the Brooklyn Museum, Oct. 2006 - Jan. 2007and was based on her book "Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer's Life, 1990 – 2005" The exhibition traveled around the globe for some time.
-In 2007, Leibovitz took Queen Elizabeth II's photo in Virginia.
-In 2007, she also worked with sisney
-On April 25, 2008, her most recent work included the photo of Miley Cyrus on the front of Vanity Fair that brought up a ton of issues.
I can't wait to see a continuation of work from her!
I really am glad i learned who this photographer is. she doesnt make the composition kind of art that we are usually used to but i love how she does portraits and i really think i can learn from her and how she captures a person. She is the only portrait artist that i have looked at and learning more about her makes me spark more intrest in other portrait artist. i also love how she brings kind of some contreversy into her work, without all the people freaking out about some of the things she puts together it wouldnt be as cool to hear her story because of so many people critisizing her, i think you can learn from critisizm.

ONE.

the first photo above is of lebron james from the nba team cleavland cavs and geisel ha i cant spell but of course the supermodel. this is an example of a typical photo annie takes. she shoots a ton for vanity fair magazine which i love because she takes two different celebrities and makes their photos look like they are best of friends. i just love how simple this picture is and how the relationship of the people in it are.

TWO

this is the photo that brought an uproar. hah personally i think it makes miley cyrus (the crazzy teen idol that everyone loves) look gross..she just looks beat up. but once people saw this picture they were like oh no miley has gone all provocative with the sheet and stuff hah but it was annie's idea. i love it because it brings contraversy. the other pictures of miley in vanity fair captured by annie were beautiful yet opposite of what miley portrays which allure a lot of readers.

THREE

i love this picture for two reasons. one i love when city is in anything. city photography is my favorite thing to look at! and two i love the two men on the building i think it brings suspense and danger together it makes great composition because its somehting you wouldnt normailly see! i love it.

FOUR

so this one is another picture like the first one just simple. but i love how annie captures the body in each of the shots. how it moves and different angles. of the same person but put together acutally looks like its moving. i like how she created this and sometime in the future would like to work more with movement.

FIVE

ah last but not least. I really like this one again because of movement. These are two russian dancers she shot recently. i wanna shoot a dancer too because of all the different things they can do. i think this shot really portrays dancers to a different level because of the movement and different shapes the body is doing. and once again i love the simplicity!

ANSELLLLLLLLLL ADAMS

So! when deciding on who I shall research next I never knew anything about ansel and everyone seems to love this feelllow and i wanted to learn more about him!

Ansel Easton Adams born. February 20, 1902 in San Francisco. His grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business, which his father ran, though his father’s natural talents were in the sciences.Adams was a hyperactive kid and was always sick. He didnt have many friends and realllly loved nature then music became the main focus. He enjoyed the piano the most and was a concert pianoist for a long time. Adams first visited Yosemite National Park in 1916 with his family soon later
his father gave him his first camera, a Kodak Brownie box camera. It all started,in thee winter, he learned basic darkroom technique working part-time for a San Francisco photo finisher. Adams read photography magazines, went to camera club meetings, and went to photography exhibits.

He really focused on his piano playing skills and in the summer of his twenties he sold his early photos and they showed good composition. In 1927, Adams had his first portfolio which inclued Monolith, the vertical western face of Half Dome taken with his Korona view camera. With the promotion of Albert Bender, his first portfolio earned 3900 dollars and soon they wanted him to do commercial assignments. Then his carreer took off and he traveled and was honored and asked to do more jobs. In 1945, Adams was asked to form the first fine art photography department at the California School of Fine Arts. Adams invited Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham and Minor White to become faculty members.

In 1952 Adams was one of the founders of the magazine Aperture, he began doing annual workshops for students. Around in the 1950s, he thought that he was on the down side of his creative life. He continued with commercial assignments for another twenty years and became a consultant on a monthly retainer for Polaroid Corporation. In 1974, Adams had a major retrospective exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then He made the first portrait of a president made a photograph. His legacy includes helping to elevate photography to an art compared to painting and music, and equal of expressing emotion and beauty.

Ansel Adams died on April 22, 1984, at the age of 82 from heart failure.Mount Ansel Adams, an 11,760 ft (3,580 m) peak in the Sierra Nevada, was named for him in 1985.The full archive of Ansel Adams' work is located at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

I think after looking at all of ansels work i feel like he was the actuall originator. All his workes were not based off others they were original. Now we are basing our work off him.. I like to see the evolving of photography and i think he plays a very big role in it.

out of all these photos i can say this is my least favorite...hahah i only like the way the sand dunes are formed because it entertains me...and it's prettty!

this one is kind of like the vantage point one...i like it because my eye goes straight to the moon... it interesting how the little bit of change can change where you focus.

This one shows me an example of getting close to your object and catching the DETAIL. this photo isnt about the backround and the backround isnt taking away from the photo it is clearly about one single thing the flower. I love love love getting close to my object and getting detail.

I love this one simply because it is a beautiful scene, and it carries simplicity which i think is key to having a good photograph like this one.

this one above is my favorite of all of them because, i loveeee the vantage point here and where my eye is wanting to follow i think it is a classssic example!

final? alrreaddddy.

welll i am having a hard time deciding on what to do for my final project... It has to relate to time somehow. All these thoughts are in my head but i just keeping thinking about doing something on aging...or growing up. to me that is the ultimate way to invovle "time". i could take three different age groups. so id use a child, middle age person, and a senior. i think id have to plan out more of what i am going to do as far as age and what not. but that is my general idea that maybe altered...

HENRI CARTIER BRESSON.

The photographer that I chose to learn more about for my first research project is Henri Cartier-Bresson. Henri was born on August 22, 1908 in a little town right ouside of Paris. He was one of five children and his father was textile manufacturer. As a child Henri had a Brownie box camera then upgraded to a 3 by 4 camera which disappointed his father because he thought Henri would take over the family buisness....but he was wrong Henri had his own agenda. Henri first decided to be a painter while he was in catholic school, then he followed to an art school to pursuit more painting. During his college years he attended Cambridge, then went to the french army. When he returned from the military he first was inspired by a photograph Martin Munkacsi of the boys in Africa, from there is when he started his true passion of photography.

Henri explained, "I suddenly understood that a photograph could fix eternity in an instant." He started taking up photography seriously he went out and shot all around Europe the photos he first took were entered Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1932 and subsequently at the Ateneo Club in Madrid. In 1934 in Mexico, he shared an exhibition with Manuel Alvarez Bravo. In 1934 Cartier-Bresson met photographer David Seymour and Hungarian photographer Robert Capa. The three shared a studio. After he traveled everywhere except his home country he went back and did a ton of work about the returning french prisoners. Twards the end of the war rumors spread that Henri had died, but in 1947 on his work came out at the MoMA along with his first book The Photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Later in 1947 he along with his coworkers founded Magnum photos. Then Henri traveled even more everywhere along to India and Indonesia he also started gaining respect from the Dutch, along with his home country where he earned is exhibition at the Louvre. He was consitered the first photographer that shot freely in the post war Soviet Union. Henri retired from photography in 1975 and put his camera on display in his home. Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation was made by his wife and daughter in 2003. On August 3, 2004 Henri passed away.

Henri Cartier-Bresson really inspired me, in both his life and his work. He was an example of a artist who didnt think photography is his first love. I also think it's amazing because of all the places he has been and seen in the world. His photography is something that i haven't seen. He takes real concepts and real life throught the whole world and make them look interesting. I also love all the work he has done during war because usually I dont like photographs about war. I am glad I did my research on Henri.

PHOTOS:

i like this one above because henri does a lot with prisons, but this one is different. it's different because you dont see any faces only the feet and the arms kind of saying help me but it adds mystery because you dont know who is behind the iron gate.

i love this one because of all the work ive seen by henri this one is the most laid back photo. i have seen all his work on war and rough times. this one is great because it just shows kids in spain being kids and i like it very much. i also love the place where he chose to shoot it with a little bit of the wall where there is a hole.
